The Bike That Started It All

Tom (TJ) Frisbee stands with the Iver Johnson bicycle (wooden rims added later) that his dad, Bel, rode with friends in Pasadena CA, in the 1930s. The joy of cycling was passed down as Tom picked up a fixed-gear bike while in college, commuting and training in the hills of SoCal.

Looking for opportunities for a job change in the early 1970’s, Tom took his love of cycling, returned to the town where he grew up, and opened TJ Frisbee Bicycles in March 1972.
On opening day, people lined up to see this new business, and the equipment needed for the newly popular sport of cycling. The 1000 square foot store was busy all day, and continued to be so, creating the need for a larger space for product, and the repair area need to keep everyone rolling.

August of 1974 saw the emergence of a new address with 2400 square feet, more staff and more product. The physically active Ridgecrest community made Frisbee’s a local gathering place, and many new friendships, and competitions, were cemented there.

The town was changing and Frisbee’s again felt that a better physical location, room for a larger repair area and a wider variety of bicycles, parts and accessories would benefit all. So, in March of 1990, friends, family and customers wheeled, toted, pushed, carried and otherwise moved EVERYTHING to the store’s present location. Who knew there was so much stuff?? The 6300 square feet, at first airy and spacious, soon filled with the latest cycling gear. One, then two, then dozens of event-winners’ jerseys were hung from the ceiling to be enjoyed and admired.

Here we are today, continuing the tradition started many years ago, doing our best to deal honestly and in a friendly professional manner with all who walk through the door.

What We Do

IMG_0599

  • Stock only high-quality bicycles and related products
  • Help you find your perfect ride
  • Help assure that your children have the safest ride
  • Help you accessorize your ride for optimal enjoyment
  • Help you accessorize your body for optimal comfort
  • Never “upgrade” your ride by pushing a more expensive product
  • Never try to sell you more than you need or want
  • Special order products that are not in stock
  • Maintain your ride so that you will always enjoy the ride

Forty-one years, and counting, of experience in the retail bicycle business has taught us a lot, not only about bicycles, about people. Delightful people, people who keep us on our toes! Our customers are “our” people. We are here because you continue to come through the door.

Whether you’re competing, commuting, riding the trails or hitting the road for endurance and speed training, these years of experience enable us to get you on the right style of bike — Road, Mountain, Comfort, or Hybrid — and make sure that you’ve got the frame size that fits you.

Bring the kids. From balance bikes to multi-gear mountain bikes, we’ll help make sure that the non-adults have the proper ride for family outings or riding to school and goofing off with friends.

Others—we’re talking the young and young-at-heart here—need a bike that will take the beating of jumps and flips and ramps. We do those bike styles, too.

TJ and the crew are known to be THE mechanical problem-solvers and fixers. TJ started out by teaching himself to build wheels and has expanded his knowledge of everything bikes ever since, sharing with all who have donned an apron at the repair stands. Big-box bikes to big-bucks bikes, Steve, Todd and Zach work on it all, and make it all work.
